A University of Lagos (UNILAG) law graduate, Maryam Agoro, has died just a day after participating in her convocation ceremony, sparking shock and grief across the university community and on social media.
Agoro reportedly passed away shortly after celebrating the academic milestone she had worked for over several years. News of her death was shared on X on January 21, 2026, by a user identified as Confidence Ufuoma (@plantcodesss).
“You did your convocation yesterday, and today you’re no more. You deserve to be celebrated, and you will be,” Ufuoma wrote in an emotional tribute, recalling Agoro’s struggles and expressing hope that she is at peace.
The post triggered an outpouring of condolences from students, alumni, and other social media users. An X user, @Coachchair007, prayed for her soul and comfort for her family, describing the loss as deeply painful coming so soon after her graduation.
Another user, @Sharon2Eniola, reflected on the fleeting nature of life, noting how a moment of celebration quickly turned into mourning, while offering prayers for Agoro’s family.
UNILAG held its 2024/2025 convocation ceremony on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at its main campus, marking the institution’s 55th convocation. A total of 16,506 graduates were awarded degrees, including 272 first-class honours recipients.
The Faculty of Engineering recorded the highest number of first-class graduates with 89 out of 613 students. The Faculty of Law graduated 321 students, including three first-class degree holders, while the Faculty of Management Sciences produced 1,163 graduates, with 180 earning first-class honours.
