Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has confirmed the Democratic Republic of Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament, officially ending Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an accreditation notice issued to journalists on Wednesday, FIFA outlined details of the six-nation play-off competition that will determine the final two slots for the tournament to be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
DR Congo’s confirmation shuts the door on Nigeria’s challenge following their November 2025 CAF play-off encounter. The Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, were defeated on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Subsequently, the Nigeria Football Federation lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the match. However, FIFA’s latest announcement confirms that DR Congo will proceed to the global play-off tournament.
The six countries set to compete in the inter-confederation play-offs are Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname. The tournament is scheduled to commence on March 26.
The development brings Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup campaign to a disappointing close, with the Super Eagles missing out on a place in the expanded global showpiece.
