Governor Dauda Lawal’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has triggered a surge in party membership across Zamfara, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Malam Abubukar Nakwada, said.
The spike occurred just three days after APC reopened its e-membership registration portal.
Nakwada reported that the party’s total membership in the state now stands at 158,697.
He said, “Just three days after reopening registration, approximately 60,987 new members had registered, adding to the 97,710 already registered before Gov. Lawal joined the party a few days ago.”
He highlighted that an average of 20,329 people registered daily, reflecting the governor’s strong grassroots appeal.
Nakwada added, “On average, no fewer than 20,329 people are formally registering with the party daily, demonstrating Gov. Lawal’s formidable grassroots appeal and the growing APC’s popularity in Zamfara.”
He praised the resilience of Lawal’s supporters, who turned out despite fasting and harsh weather.
The SSG expressed confidence that APC would meet its membership target before the March 25 deadline.
He said the massive turnout shows public approval of the governor’s decision.
He added, “This brings the APC’s total membership to 158,697 in the state as of 19:30 hours on March 15.”
