Tension has gripped Ijagemo in the Alimosho/Ijegun axis of Lagos State following the killing of a 39-year-old trader, Charles Chimezie Nwachukwu, during a violent night attack inside his shop.
The incident, which occurred between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on a Friday, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for an independent investigation after allegations emerged that a serving police officer led the assailants.
According to the victim’s wife, Blessing Nwachukwu, a group of about 30 armed men stormed the shop, attacking her husband with guns and cutlasses. She alleged that the group was led by a police officer identified as Samson Ajakaye, popularly known in the area as “Olopa.”
Residents described a chaotic scene, with forced entry into the shop, destruction of property, and panic as neighbours rushed out after hearing distress calls.
The victim was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries, leaving behind his wife and four children.
Community members said the attack may be linked to a lingering land dispute.
The widow alleged that her husband had ongoing disagreements with a local traditional authority and another resident, adding that previous complaints and petitions over threats to his life did not yield protection. These claims, however, remain under investigation.
The incident has drawn strong reactions from community leaders. An Igbo leader in the area, Dr. Anthony Ukachukwu, said he alerted the Eze Ndigbo of Alimosho, Eze C.C. Nwokedi, who visited the scene. The traditional leader reportedly condemned the killing, warning that failure to ensure justice could erode public trust in security agencies.
Other stakeholders, including youth leaders and residents, have called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Police Command to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation.
Police authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing. Community sources indicated that the Area Commander overseeing the division visited the bereaved family on the directive of the state Commissioner of Police. At least three suspects, including the officer named by the widow, are said to be in custody.
Authorities have yet to issue a final report, and no court ruling has been made on the matter.
Meanwhile, the incident has heightened fear among residents, with many calling for justice and increased security. For the grieving family and the wider community, attention now turns to the outcome of the investigation and whether those responsible will be held accountable.
