The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has cautioned Nigerians about the spread of fake messages, emails, and online communications falsely claiming to originate from the apex bank.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, said the deceptive messages are being used to mislead the public about the CBN’s leadership, policies, and licensing activities, while also targeting individuals for cyberattacks.
She explained that many of the fraudulent messages urge recipients to click suspicious links or provide sensitive personal information, warning Nigerians to remain vigilant.
Sidi-Ali stressed that the official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria is www.cbn.gov.ng, urging the public to rely only on verified sources for information about the bank.
She further advised Nigerians not to click on unverified links, avoid sharing personal details on suspicious platforms, and report any suspected fraud to the appropriate security agencies.
The CBN reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the financial system, noting that it is strengthening cybersecurity measures in collaboration with relevant institutions to combat digital fraud and safeguard citizens.
