Movement will be restricted across Lagos State on Saturday, April 25, 2026, as the government resumes its monthly environmental sanitation exercise with strict compliance measures.

The Lagos State Government announced that the exercise will hold on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., during which residents are expected to remain within their neighbourhoods to clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage systems.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said enforcement teams drawn from relevant agencies and local government authorities will be deployed to monitor compliance through inspections carried out during and after the sanitation period. He warned that defaulters would be sanctioned in line with existing environmental laws.

Authorities also disclosed that waste collection trucks will be mobilised to evacuate refuse generated during the exercise, while incentives will be introduced to reward the cleanest local government areas, council development areas, and streets as part of efforts to boost community participation.

The government urged residents to cooperate fully, stressing that the initiative is aimed at promoting a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment.

The move follows a symbolic flag-off of the programme in March and marks the return of the sanitation exercise nearly a decade after it was suspended in 2016 due to legal concerns over movement restrictions.

While the policy has been welcomed by some residents as a step toward improving environmental hygiene and reducing flooding, others have raised concerns about enforcement and called for sustained public education on proper waste disposal.
