Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has revealed how he almost lost his position during the crisis surrounding the impeachment saga involving Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
Speaking on the controversy, Gbajabiamila disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally summoned him to his study at his Abuja residence during the height of the political tension and questioned him about the alleged involvement of actor-turned-lawmaker Desmond Elliott in the crisis.
According to Gbajabiamila, the President specifically asked him if Desmond Elliott was “his boy,” to which he responded in the affirmative.
He said President Tinubu then informed him that intelligence reports suggested Desmond Elliott was among those allegedly fueling problems within the Lagos State House of Assembly during the impeachment controversy.
Gbajabiamila stated that he immediately defended the lawmaker, insisting that Elliott was not part of the group allegedly behind the moves against Obasa. However, the President reportedly maintained that security intelligence available to him indicated otherwise.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives further revealed that after the meeting, he contacted Desmond Elliott and warned him to distance himself from the group if he was truly involved.
He added that the situation escalated days later when the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) allegedly contacted him, informing him that his own name was now being linked to the impeachment plot because of his perceived support for Elliott.
Gbajabiamila said he again reached out to the Lagos lawmaker and urged him to publicly deny any involvement in the impeachment saga in order to clear the air.
According to him, despite the advice and repeated concerns raised, Desmond Elliott has yet to make any public statement distancing himself from the controversy.
Gbajabiamila’s comments are now being interpreted in political circles as a clear withdrawal of support for Elliott, who is reportedly seeking a fourth term in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
