Lagos explains worsening road conditions

The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has attributed the deterioration of roads across the state to persistent heavy rainfall, flooding and the state’s low-lying terrain, assuring residents that permanent repairs will commence once weather conditions improve.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs, Samuel Ayetutu, on behalf of the General Manager, Tokunbo Ajanaku, the agency appealed to motorists and residents to be patient as ongoing rains continue to damage roads and other public infrastructure.

Ajanaku said the unusually high volume of rainfall experienced this year has affected many cities globally but poses greater challenges in Lagos because large parts of the state lie below sea level, making roads more vulnerable to flooding and groundwater pressure.

He noted that the corporation had rehabilitated several roads during the dry season but explained that continuous rainfall has hindered permanent repairs, as asphalt can only be laid effectively under dry conditions to ensure durability.

According to him, LSPWC maintenance teams are carrying out temporary palliative repairs and fixing potholes where conditions permit to improve safety and ease movement while awaiting suitable weather for comprehensive reconstruction.

He added that engineers are monitoring roads across the state and responding promptly to emergencies, stressing that the agency remains committed to delivering lasting road infrastructure rather than short-term fixes.

Ajanaku also urged residents to stop dumping refuse into drainage channels, warning that blocked drains worsen flooding, accelerate road deterioration and increase maintenance costs.

The state government said it has intensified drainage clearance and flood monitoring to reduce the impact of the prolonged rainy season.
