The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate rains in Lagos and several other southern states from Monday to Wednesday.
In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency predicted a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine across the southern region during the period.
For Monday, NiMet said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains were expected later in the day over parts of Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
It also forecast thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River earlier in the day.
For Tuesday, NiMet predicted sunny skies with a few patches of clouds over the northern region, while the North-Central region would experience a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine.
The agency also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo and Delta states later in the day.
On Wednesday, NiMet said the southern region would remain cloudy with intervals of sunshine, with prospects of thunderstorms and moderate rains over parts of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.
The agency warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised residents to secure loose objects to prevent accidents.
It also urged motorists to avoid driving under heavy rain, while residents were advised to disconnect electrical appliances from sockets and stay away from tall trees because of the risk of falling branches.
NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning.
The agency said temperatures were expected to remain high, potentially causing thermal discomfort, and advised the public to wear breathable clothing, stay in well-ventilated environments and remain hydrated.
