A mechanic identified as Samson has been killed after he was allegedly lured to Abijo in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State under the guise of repairing a Mercedes-Benz car.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, September 15.
Samson, who operated a mechanic workshop around Warike Estate, was said to have received a call to repair the vehicle and subsequently travelled to the location where the car was reportedly parked.
He was allegedly taken into a nearby bush after arriving at the location, where he was hacked to death.
A police source said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
The source also said suspected cult members were believed to be behind the incident.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform, in a post seen after the incident, alleged that the killing was carried out as retaliation for the death of an Eiye cult member, Ola Sheu, who was reportedly killed by members of the NBM cult group around Adeba Bus Stop in Lakowe, Ibeju-Lekki, on September 9.
The platform alleged that Samson may have been mistaken for a cult member following the circulation of a photograph showing him wearing an Aye cult beret at his graduation.
However, the allegation has not been independently established by the police.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying Samson’s family initially reported that he was missing.
The police said detectives visited his apartment after receiving the report and commenced efforts to trace his mobile phone and determine his whereabouts.
The investigation is ongoing as the police work to establish what happened and apprehend those responsible.
