The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials worth over ₦200 million during a raid on five shops at Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State.
The operation, conducted today following credible intelligence, uncovered fake labels, corks, packs and outer packaging materials bearing the names of popular alcoholic beverage and other product brands, including Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.
NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement operatives reportedly encountered threats and resistance from traders during the raid, making it difficult to evacuate the seized materials.
The owners of the five shops were absent during the operation. The agency consequently placed the premises on hold to prevent interference with the remaining items.
NAFDAC also invited the Market Union Chairman, who pledged to secure the sealed premises and assist the agency in identifying and producing the shop owners for further investigation.
