The Lagos State Government is set to begin a joint enforcement operation to ensure commercial bus drivers and conductors obtain and display prescribed identification badges and comply with other transport regulations.

The exercise, coordinated by the Ministry of Transportation through its Directorate of Public Transport and Commuter Services (PTCS), will involve the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The ministry’s Director of Public Transport and Commuter Services, Nuhman Edu, said the initiative was aimed at improving commuter safety, promoting accountability and strengthening regulatory compliance among commercial transport operators.

He identified key areas of concern to include improper vehicle registration, failure to display vehicle body tags, absence of stage carriage permits, and lack of identification badges for drivers and conductors.

Edu said the involvement of VIS and LASTMA would enhance the verification of relevant documents during routine traffic and compliance operations.

He warned that operators found violating the regulations would face enforcement or corrective measures in line with existing laws, approved guidelines and established procedures.

According to him, proper identification of commercial vehicles and their operators would make them easier to trace, assist investigations involving vehicles allegedly linked to criminal activities and enable authorities to resolve passenger complaints more efficiently.

He explained that the participating agencies would collaborate on document verification, recording compliance status, identifying violations, initiating corrective action, sharing relevant information and referring cases requiring further regulatory attention.

Edu added that the ministry would engage transport unions and associations through stakeholder meetings, media campaigns and public sensitisation to familiarise operators with the requirements.

He also announced plans for continuous monitoring and evaluation of compliance across the state, supported by reporting and feedback mechanisms to identify and address regulatory lapses.

He reiterated that the enforcement framework was primarily designed to strengthen security and accountability in Lagos’ public transportation system.
