Six new trains will be added to Lagos’s rail system following successful safety tests in China. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) made this known via a statement on Thursday.
According to the agency, the trains will operate on both the Blue and Red Lines of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) system.
The Blue Line currently operates 72 daily trips along its 13-kilometre route between Marina and Mile 2. The service began operations in September 2023 under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
“The additional train sets will significantly increase our service frequency,” the statement read. The expanded fleet aims to increase passenger capacity and strengthen the system’s economic performance.
The new trains will support the planned extension to Okokomaiko. This second phase, extending 14 kilometres from Mile 2, is scheduled for completion in early 2027.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the Blue Line’s first phase in January 2023. The expansion represents a continuation of Lagos State’s transport infrastructure development, designed to serve the mobility requirements of the city’s growing population.
Similarly, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the Agbado-Oyingbo Red Line last year signalling the borth of two metros in the state.
The additional trains will increase the system’s current capacity, which serves the Marina to Mile 2 corridor.
