The Lagos State government has initiated a comprehensive plan to alleviate flooding in several areas of Lagos Island, including Aroloya Street, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, and Oroyinyin.
To address the issue, the government has set up pumping stations to remove stormwater and relieve residents and business owners.
Regeneration Project
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that the government has approved a total regeneration of Lagos Island. The project includes :
– Improving and expanding drainage infrastructure: Primary and secondary channels will be upgraded to enhance water flow and reduce flooding.
– Constructing pumping stations with smart sensors: The new pumping stations will be equipped with advanced sensors to monitor and control floodwaters effectively.
– Reconstructing major roads: Key roads will be rebuilt to address tidal challenges and improve overall infrastructure.
Cooperation and Next Steps
Residents are urged to cooperate with contractors and dispose of waste properly according to guidelines set by the Lagos State government. While efforts are being made to minimize disruptions, occasional inconveniences may occur during the construction period.
