Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a thorough investigation into serious allegations made against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Elemoro Division, as detailed in an April 24, report by the Vanguard newspaper titled “Power in Wrong Hands: How a Lagos DPO Tried to Jail 2 Innocent Mechanics”.
In response to the report, the Commissioner has constituted a five-man committee of senior officers, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and including the Officer in Charge of Legal Affairs, to investigate the allegations and submit their findings within a week.
According to Lagos police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, to ensure the investigation is free from interference, the DPO and other officers mentioned in the report have been redeployed from Elemoro Division. The CP has assured the public that the outcome of the investigation will be made public.
Additionally, the Commissioner has extended an invitation to the lawyer involved in the case for a meeting with the investigative committee at their convenience.
CP Jimoh emphasized that the Lagos State Police Command does not condone inhuman treatment or any miscarriage of justice. He stressed that if any officers are found culpable, strict disciplinary measures will be taken to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Police Commissioner urged the public to continue to trust the police and rest assured that any proven wrongdoing by officers will be appropriately addressed.
