The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Ijora-Marine Bridge in Lagos State starting 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, to enable urgent repair works scheduled to last 21 days.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, who explained that the repair project is critical to the safety and longevity of the bridge.
According to Kesha, while some sections of the bridge will undergo complete closure, others will remain partially accessible throughout the repair period.
“The work involves lifting the bridge deck to replace worn-out bearings and carrying out other critical maintenance tasks to restore structural integrity,” she stated.
Kesha emphasised that the repairs aim to enhance safety and improve comfort for both motorists and pedestrians who use the bridge regularly.
“We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but this is a necessary step to keep the bridge in good condition and ensure the safety of all road users,” she said.
To manage traffic during the closure, diversion routes have been mapped out, and traffic officers will be deployed to maintain order and guide motorists through alternative routes.
She urged residents, commuters, and business owners in the area to plan their journeys ahead and cooperate with officials to minimise disruption.
“Safety signs and traffic management tools will be put in place to reduce inconvenience. We sincerely apologise and appreciate the public’s patience and understanding,” she added.
