Five people have died in a head-on collision involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck on the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call about the crash at 5:16am and immediately deployed its Dolphin Team from the Igando base to the scene.

According to LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary investigations indicated that the crash was caused by speeding and reckless driving by the Camry driver.

Emergency responders from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Federal Road Safety Corps and the police from Morogbo Division participated in the rescue operation.

The bodies of the victims were recovered and handed over to FRSC officials, while two tow trucks were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles. The vehicles were taken to the Morogbo Police Division, and the road was subsequently cleared and reopened to traffic.

Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices, particularly during early morning journeys.

He reiterated that road safety was a collective responsibility and assured that LASEMA would continue to collaborate with other emergency agencies to ensure prompt response to road crashes across Lagos State.
