President Warns Against Unauthorized Reclamation, Pledges to Revoke Illegal Planning Permits
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a firm warning to Lagos State and other subnational governments over the proliferation of unauthorized island developments and encroachments on federal road setbacks and maritime zones.
Speaking on Thursday during the commissioning of the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road in Lagos, the President condemned the growing trend of unregulated land reclamation and reckless planning approvals, calling it a serious threat to national infrastructure, coastal safety, and the country’s long-term development strategy.
“I have directed the Honorable Minister of Works, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, and all state governors—this legacy project must be protected,” Tinubu declared. “We must secure stable setbacks for future expansion and infrastructure development to strengthen our road network.”
He warned that any planning approvals granted on federal setbacks without proper collaboration with federal authorities would be revoked. He urged states, especially Lagos, to desist from approving developments on illegally created islands or waterfronts.
“Please, our dear governors, let’s work together. Don’t grant planning approvals without involving the Surveyor-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Works,” Tinubu stated. “I’m glad the Deputy Governor of Lagos State is here and taking note—we will revoke all approvals already issued on setbacks. No more approvals for illegally created islands.”
The President, who initiated the Lekki Deep Sea Port project during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, expressed pride in the successful completion of the port access road, describing it as legacy infrastructure that will boost logistics efficiency, reduce operational costs, and enhance national economic returns.
Calling the port project a model of successful public-private partnership (PPP), Tinubu added, “I can brag about that.”
As his administration advances a coordinated infrastructure development agenda, President Tinubu made it clear that unregulated urban sprawl and disregard for federal planning protocols will no longer be tolerated.
