Beginning Monday, July 14, 2025, three of Ijebu Ode’s main markets—Ita Ale, Ita Osu, and Oke Aje—have been temporarily closed. The shutdown would give the people of Ijebuland time to grieve the loss of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, their beloved traditional leader, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 91.
At a statement issued at Ijebu Ode, Dare Alebiosu, the Chairman of the Ijebu Ode Local Government, issued the directive. He clarified that the shutdown is a sign of respect for the late Awujale and adheres to Ijebuland cultural customs.
The markets will stay closed till further notice; traditional authorities will be consulted before the reopening date is announced. Residents and traders have been asked to abide by the order in a courteous and nonviolent manner.
The purpose of this act is to give Ijebuland’s sons and daughters a place to mourn the great loss of their paramount king and to pay respect to his legacy in line with regional traditions.
