The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that more than 2.5 million Nigerians had registered online, while 72,274 had registered in person during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, explained that the exercise aims to give citizens the opportunity to register ahead of elections and to provide both online and in-person access.
He stated that the online registration began on August 18, while the in-person registration started on August 25.
It was noted that the update came after the commission’s meeting on Tuesday, August 29.
Olumekun said the figures showed that 1,218,482 of the online registrants were male, while 1,313,580 were female.
He added that young people between 18 and 34 years old made up the majority, with 1,602,484 registrants, while students accounted for 647,528.
For the in-person registration, he reported that 35,622 were male and 36,652 were female.
He further said that 54,718 were aged between 18 and 34, while 30,953 were students.
It was noted that the announcement came from Abuja and that the exercise is ongoing at INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide.
He further explained that staff capture biometric details such as fingerprints and facial data at the centres, which open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
