Nigeria was plunged into darkness on Wednesday morning following another collapse of the national electricity grid, leaving almost all distribution companies (DisCos) without supply.
As of 11:54 a.m. on September 10, 2025, data from the grid showed that only the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company was receiving 20 megawatts (MW) of power, while all other DisCos had zero allocation. This brought total national supply to just 20 MW — far below the country’s average demand.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that the grid suffered a disturbance and that “system restoration is in progress.”
The collapse triggered a nationwide blackout, affecting households, businesses, and essential services across the country. Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Benin, Yola, and Ikeja DisCos all recorded zero load allocation at the time of the disturbance.
Grid instability has been a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s power sector, with blackouts often linked to poor infrastructure, gas supply shortages, and system frequency imbalances.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to restore normal supply across all DisCos.
