The Lagos State Government has said it is taking comprehensive steps to fight sickle cell disease across the state.

Officials explained that the initiative is led by Prof. Akin Abayomi, State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abosede Wellington, Coordinator of the Lagos State Sickle Cell Disorder Control Programme, and Ms Timi Edwin, Chairperson of the Coalition and CEO of CrimsonBow Sickle Cell Initiative.

They added that foundations, NGOs, health workers, and international partners are supporting the effort.

It was noted that the government plans to establish haematology daycare centres in all local governments.

They added that the plan includes expanding newborn screening to 75 health facilities and training over 500 health workers.

Officials stated that they will provide hydroxyurea therapy, gene therapy, and stem cell transplantation for patients.

It was reported that the soon-to-be-completed Massey Specialist Children’s Hospital will serve as a hub for advanced sickle cell care and research.

These initiatives aim to reduce painful crises, lower under-five mortality, and ensure equitable access to treatment.

Officials said they will convert existing oxygen triage centres into sickle cell facilities and strengthen partnerships with schools, hospitals, pharmaceutical firms, NGOs, and international partners.

They emphasised that coalition strategies with clear targets, sustainable funding, and a comprehensive state sickle cell registry will coordinate all efforts effectively.
