The Lagos State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in crime detection with the arrest of 28-year-old John Samuel, a notorious armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin, and ex-convict, linked to the violent robbery of a businessman in Allen Avenue, Ikeja.

Police operatives tracked and apprehended Samuel in his hideout in Epe on Friday, September 19, 2025, at about 2:00 p.m.

According to the Command, Samuel, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, had only recently been released from prison after serving a six-year jail term for armed robbery. Barely a month later, on August 18, 2025, he allegedly shot and wounded businessman Gbenga Obama before dispossessing him of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables in broad daylight at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue.

CCTV footage of the attack reportedly showed Samuel firing at the victim with an English pistol while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle. The victim, who sustained serious gunshot injuries, has since been treated and discharged.

During interrogation, Samuel confessed to selling the stolen jewellery for ₦4 million, far below its actual market value. Police say efforts are ongoing to track down his accomplices.

Commending the operatives for the successful operation, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, assured residents of the Command’s resolve to rid the state of violent criminals.

“The Command reiterates its commitment to the safety and protection of all residents and assures Lagosians they can go about their lawful activities without fear,” he said, while warning that Lagos has no hiding place for criminals.
