Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close associates.
Joshua reportedly arrived at London’s Stansted Airport on Friday evening aboard a private jet, days after the accident occurred on a busy Lagos–Ibadan highway in southwest Nigeria.
The crash happened on Monday when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team rammed into a stationary truck. Two occupants of the vehicle — Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — died at the scene, while Joshua and the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, sustained minor injuries.
Nigerian police have since charged Kayode, 46, with dangerous driving causing death. He is expected to appear in court on January 20.
Joshua was taken to hospital after the incident and was discharged on Wednesday, according to officials. Ghami was the boxer’s long-time strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.
Reports indicate that Joshua returned to Britain ahead of the funerals of the deceased. The 2012 Olympic gold medallist, who has family roots in Nigeria, had been on holiday in the country following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.
