The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the just-concluded local government elections in Lagos State, winning all 20 chairmanship positions and 375 out of the 376 available councillorship seats.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) confirmed the outcome on Sunday, noting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched the remaining councillorship seat in Ward D, Yaba.
Over seven million registered voters in Lagos were eligible to participate in the elections, held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, to select new chairmen and councillors across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
According to LASIEC, 15 out of Nigeria’s 19 registered political parties contested in the elections.
Despite some reports of voter intimidation and late arrival of election materials, the exercise was largely peaceful. LASIEC Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd.), explained that perceived low voter turnout may have been misjudged, as many voters left immediately after casting their ballots. She added that the commission was able to overcome logistical challenges, especially in hard-to-reach rural areas.
With this result, the APC has once again consolidated its dominance in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital and political stronghold of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who governed the state from 1999 to 2007.
The 20 LGAs where elections held include Agege, Alimosho, Epe, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Surulere, while the 37 LCDAs cover areas such as Oriade, Ojokoro, Bariga, Ayobo-Ipaja, and Yaba.
