The Lagos State Police Command has described the protest against Chinese traders at the Association of Progressive Members of Nigeria (ASPAMDA) market in the Trade Fair Complex as the handiwork of a few disgruntled individuals.
The command said arrests had been made in connection with the protest, which reportedly involved some traders demanding that Chinese nationals selling goods in the market leave the premises.
The protesters were said to have accused the Chinese traders of selling goods at cheaper prices, creating what they described as unfair competition for Nigerian traders.
Speaking on the development, the Lagos State Police Command said the protest was not representative of the entire market community, attributing it to a small group of disgruntled individuals.
“It was the handiwork of few disgruntled fellows in the market and arrests have been made,” the police said.
The command did not immediately disclose the number of persons arrested or the identities of those detained.
The protest reportedly took place at the Trade Fair Complex, a major commercial hub in Lagos where thousands of traders operate.
The development comes amid growing concerns among local traders over the increasing presence of foreign businesses in Nigeria’s retail and wholesale markets, particularly traders from China.
Some Nigerian traders have repeatedly complained that foreign traders have an advantage because of their access to cheaper products and supply chains, making it difficult for local businesses to compete.
The police, however, moved to calm the situation and prevent the protest from escalating into a wider disturbance at the market.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the protest and determine whether any laws were violated by those involved.
