The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has held a peaceful protest.
They demanded that the Federal Government implement the renegotiated 2009 agreement, pay withheld salaries, increase wages, and grant university autonomy.
Comrade Yusuf Madugu, ASUU-BUK Vice-Chairman, said the protest became necessary because the government has not acted on the agreement finalized in December 2024.
He added that the government still owes three and a half months of salaries withheld after the 2022 strike.
Madugu also noted the government has released only one tranche of the N200 billion revitalisation fund meant for university improvements.
He emphasized that the union’s demands include signing and implementing the agreement, salary adjustments, and proper funding for facilities like laboratories and libraries.
Madugu warned that if the government fails to meet these demands, ASUU will decide on further actions after a national emergency congress.
Abdullahi Usman-Baba, President of the BUK Students Union Government, supported the protest and appealed for dialogue with the Federal Government.
He stressed that strikes disrupt students’ academic calendars and urged the government to listen to ASUU’s concerns.
The protest took place on Tuesday at Bayero University, Kano, Kano State.
It marked the union’s first step to push the government into action.
