Authorities have identified Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old student from Utah, as the suspect behind the assassination of conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead at a rally at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

Robinson, a scholarship student at Utah State University, was taken into custody late Thursday night in southern Utah after a day-and-a-half-long manhunt that spanned multiple counties. Officials confirmed that Robinson was apprehended in Washington, Utah, where he lived with his family in a six-bedroom home.

Confession and Arrest

According to law enforcement sources quoted by Daily Mail, Robinson confessed to the killing in a conversation with his father, Matt Robinson, a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. His father immediately alerted authorities and secured his son until police arrived.

Robinson’s mother, Amber Robinson, works for Intermountain Support Coordination Services, a state-contracted agency that assists people with disabilities. Family social media profiles depict Robinson as a high-achieving student who enjoyed vacations, sports, and time with his two younger brothers.

The Assassination

Kirk, 31, was speaking at a Turning Point USA event on UVU’s campus when a gunshot rang out from an estimated 200 yards away, striking him in the neck. Witnesses described chaos as panicked students ran for safety.

Surveillance footage later showed a figure fleeing from a rooftop near the venue, sparking a statewide search. Robinson was eventually captured after initial suspects were mistakenly detained and released.

Kirk collapsed on stage and was rushed to hospital but did not survive. He leaves behind his wife, Erika Frantzve, their three-year-old daughter, and 16-month-old son. The couple had celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary in May.

Profile of the Suspect

Old photos from Robinson’s social media showed him dressed in a Donald Trump costume for Halloween in 2017, as well as posing with firearms, including a Browning .50 calibre machine gun. Despite a seemingly supportive family background, officials are still investigating Robinson’s motive.

Authorities confirmed at a press briefing that Robinson will face the death penalty if convicted.

Reactions and Tributes

The assassination has sparked national outrage and renewed concerns about escalating political violence in the United States.

Former President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, announced Robinson’s arrest during a Fox News appearance, praising law enforcement and revealing that “someone very close” to the suspect had turned him in.

Trump also paid tribute to Kirk, writing on Truth Social:

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me… Charlie, we love you!”

President Trump further ordered all American flags lowered to half-staff until Sunday evening in Kirk’s honor.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox vowed justice, saying: “Working with the FBI and Utah law enforcement, we will bring to justice the individual responsible for this tragedy.”

Kirk’s Legacy

Kirk, a rising star in conservative politics, co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at just 18 years old. Over the years, he became a prominent media personality and key figure in the MAGA movement, amassing millions of followers and spearheading youth outreach efforts.

He was listed on Forbes 30 Under 30 and was the youngest speaker at the 2016 Republican National Convention. His advocacy spanned college campuses, faith-based initiatives, and conservative grassroots organizing.

His sudden death, described by allies as “a devastating loss to the movement,” has been compared to other recent high-profile acts of political violence in the U.S., further intensifying debate over safety and polarization in American politics.
