Socialite Afolabi Kazeem Michael, popularly known as KC Luxury, arrived at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday in an ambulance while receiving oxygen, as his lawyer sought bail for medical treatment.

Michael is standing trial alongside Boniface Freeman Ochoche Sule and Ikechukwu Ekugo Patriarch on a 22-count charge bordering on the alleged conspiracy to export 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine to the United Kingdom and money laundering. The defendants have pleaded not guilty.

During Friday’s proceedings, a correctional service officer told the court that Michael was critically ill and had been hospitalised.

Bukki Yahya, a nurse attached to the Police Hospital in Falomo, testified that Michael was admitted on October 7, 2026, and diagnosed with asthma and sepsis.

The nurse said Michael remained inside the ambulance parked at the court premises because he was on oxygen and could not be moved into the courtroom.

Following the testimony, the trial judge, Musa Kakaki, ordered that the defendant be returned to the hospital.

Bail application

After the directive, Michael’s counsel, Emefo Etudo, moved a bail application dated October 16, 2026, asking the court to release his client to receive further medical treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Etudo said Michael’s health had deteriorated, alleging that he had suffered a collapsed lung. He added that the Police Hospital had referred his client to LUTH because it lacked the facilities to manage his condition.

The lawyer further alleged that Michael was withdrawn from LUTH and taken to a correctional centre on October 13 despite his worsening health.

However, prosecution counsel Abu Ibrahim opposed the application, arguing that the court had previously considered the issue of the defendant’s medical condition.

Ibrahim maintained that Michael’s underlying ailment remained asthma, although it might have become more severe. He also described the socialite as a flight risk and urged the court to impose stringent conditions if bail was granted.

In response, Etudo urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, assuring that his client would attend subsequent proceedings. He added that Michael’s international passport was already in the custody of the authorities.

Justice Kakaki adjourned ruling on the bail application until October 28, 2026.
