MultiChoice is set to introduce a major overhaul of its DStv package structure, including a standalone sports bouquet, as new owner Canal+ seeks to simplify the platform’s offerings and stem subscriber losses.
The new packages are expected to take effect from September 17, according to reports based on internal documents and package graphics seen by South African media.
Under the proposed structure, DStv will offer five main bouquets: Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series, and Premium.
The Sports package is expected to cost from R399 per month and will focus heavily on football, including Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches, as well as cricket and selected rugby.
However, premium sporting content such as Formula 1, MotoGP, golf, tennis and major Springbok fixtures will reportedly remain exclusive to the Premium package.
The Movies & Series package, reportedly priced at about R500, will carry general entertainment content and will no longer make M-Net exclusive to Premium. M-Net, Mzansi Magic, KykNet, M Movies+ and M Movies Stars are expected to be included, alongside channels such as Discovery Channel and BBC Earth.
The Select package will replace the current Compact offering and will reportedly include PSL football.
The proposed changes represent a major departure from DStv’s traditional model, under which customers generally had to subscribe to increasingly expensive bundles to access premium sports alongside entertainment.
Canal+ took effective control of MultiChoice in September 2025 and has since embarked on a major cost-cutting and restructuring programme. Canal+ has also criticised the complexity of DStv’s existing pricing structure, which includes multiple packages and decoder options.
MultiChoice has not officially confirmed the new package structure, saying it continually reviews its products and that nothing has changed for existing subscribers.
The overhaul comes after MultiChoice shut down Showmax in April following years of losses and implemented significant staff reductions across its African operations.
If implemented as reported, customers seeking both the full sports offering and general entertainment could pay at least R899 monthly, while Premium would remain the all-in option.
