Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says some pastors, imams, bishops, sheikhs and other religious leaders have been investigated, prosecuted and convicted for financial crimes.
Olukoyede spoke on Wednesday at the 2026 Second Council Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, themed, “Shared Sacred Flourishing in Nigeria.”
He said the EFCC had numerous case files involving suspects identified by religious titles, with some convicted and serving prison sentences.
According to him, religious titles should not shield anyone from accountability or prosecution.
He called for a review of how religious titles are conferred, arguing that genuine spirituality should be demonstrated through conduct and integrity rather than titles or outward appearance.
Olukoyede said financial crime had no religious or ethnic affiliation, stressing that both Christians and Muslims suffered when public resources were stolen or misappropriated.
He urged religious leaders to play a stronger role in promoting integrity and discouraging corruption, noting that faith communities could influence character and prevent financial crimes.
The EFCC chairman also criticised religious institutions that celebrate individuals whose sources of wealth are unclear.
He said worship centres should not provide moral cover for corruption or legitimise proceeds allegedly obtained through criminal activities.
Olukoyede added that while the EFCC could investigate and prosecute financial crimes, religious communities had an important role in shaping values and cultivating honesty.
He also challenged Nigerians to examine whether their strong religious practices were reflected in the integrity of public and economic life.
