A prolonged downpour that lasted for more than 12 hours on Tuesday left several parts of Lagos flooded, disrupting business activities, shutting schools and markets, and stranding thousands of commuters.

The heavy rainfall submerged major roads and residential areas, making movement difficult across the state. Among the worst-hit locations were Ajah, Ketu, Mile 12, Lekki, Oshodi, Mushin, Gbagada, Surulere, Egbeda, Ilupeju, Abesan Estate, Ipaja Road and Idi-Oro, where floodwaters inundated streets, homes and businesses.

The flooding also triggered severe traffic congestion across the city, while many residents were forced to suspend their daily activities. Transportation costs surged as commercial drivers avoided flooded routes, leaving commuters to pay higher fares for the few available vehicles.

In several communities, residents struggled to salvage damaged property and clear debris as floodwaters gradually receded. Businesses suffered losses after shops and offices were forced to close, while some schools suspended academic activities because of the poor weather conditions.

The impact of the flooding extended to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, where operations at one of the terminals were temporarily disrupted by the heavy rains.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over perennial flash flooding in Lagos during the rainy season, with residents calling for improved drainage infrastructure and better flood management to reduce the impact of future downpours. The floors are compounded by soil saturation occasioned by continuous rainfall in the last six days.
