The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity cult group and recovered a locally made Beretta pistol and a 9mm live ammunition in Mushin.
The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebesi.
According to the statement, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) acted on credible intelligence about cult activities in Mushin and arrested one Irawo Moshod, who allegedly admitted to being a former chairman of the Aiye Confraternity.
The police said Moshod made useful disclosures about the activities of the group, including his alleged involvement in several killings in Mushin and other parts of Lagos.
Acting on the information, operatives proceeded to Idi-Oro, Mushin, where they recovered one locally made Beretta pistol and one 9mm live ammunition.
Three other suspected members of the group — Abayomi James, 29; Farouq Bankole, 28; and Steven Sunday, 19 — were subsequently arrested at Aganran by Ojuwoye.
The suspects allegedly admitted to being members of the Aiye Confraternity and disclosed that the recovered firearm was obtained from one Rilwan, whom they identified as the group’s number one member.
The police said the suspects remained in custody and were assisting with investigations, while efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of the group.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, commended the VCRU operatives for their intelligence-driven operation.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and protecting residents, warning cultists and other criminal elements to desist from their activities or face the full weight of the law.
