A four-year-old boy, his mother, and 12 other passengers narrowly escaped death on Wednesday following a lone road accident involving a fully loaded Mazda commercial bus on Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway, opposite Lafiaji inward Okun Ajah, Lagos.
Confirming the incident, the (LASTMA) described the crash as severe and potentially fatal. In a statement, the agency said the Mazda bus, with registration number AKD 509 XL, lost control, somersaulted, and landed on its side, trapping passengers in the wreckage.
According to the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, , the impact drew the attention of bystanders and emergency responders. He said the survival of the child, his mother, and other occupants was remarkable given the severity of the crash.
Adebayo said LASTMA officers responded promptly, rescuing trapped passengers and coordinating emergency evacuation. The four-year-old boy, his mother, and two other injured passengers were taken to the for treatment, while other victims were conveyed to nearby hospitals by Good Samaritans.
The cause of the accident has yet to be determined, but the case has been handed over to the for investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, , expressed sympathy to the victims and wished them a speedy recovery. He cautioned motorists, especially commercial drivers, against reckless driving and urged strict compliance with speed limits and traffic regulations.
LASTMA also called on all road users to remain vigilant and prioritise safety, stressing that adherence to traffic laws is both a legal and moral responsibility.
