The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the fatal road accident involving former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
In a statement issued on Monday, the FRSC confirmed that the crash occurred around 12:00 noon on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State. The accident involved a Lexus Jeep conveying the boxer and a stationary commercial truck.
According to preliminary reports from the Ogun Sector Command of the FRSC, operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes of being notified, enabling prompt rescue, evacuation of victims, traffic control, and prevention of secondary crashes.
The crash involved two vehicles: a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN and a stationary red Sinotruck with an unknown registration number. Five adult males were involved in the incident. Two occupants died at the scene, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and suffered only minor injuries.
The injured victim was taken to hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has been notified for further investigation and documentation.
FRSC investigations revealed that the Lexus Jeep was likely travelling above the prescribed speed limit and lost control while attempting to overtake, before crashing into the stationary truck that was properly parked by the roadside. The Corps noted that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking are serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery.
The FRSC reiterated its warning to motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking, and disregard for traffic rules, especially on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Road users were urged to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline, and prioritise safety, particularly during the festive travel period.
The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer roads through prompt emergency response and sustained public education aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities nationwide.
