Hundreds of motorists were stranded on Thursday after severe flooding submerged a section of the Benin-Ore Expressway, causing a massive traffic gridlock and disrupting movement along one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
The flooding followed hours of heavy rainfall, leaving vehicles crawling through the waterlogged stretch while many others remained trapped in queues stretching several kilometres.
Videos shared on social media showed floodwaters covering a significant portion of the expressway, with motorists struggling to navigate the submerged road amid fears of accidents and vehicle breakdowns. Some passengers were seen waiting by the roadside as travellers lamented the recurring flooding on the critical transport corridor.
Several motorists called on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to urgently address the situation before it deteriorates further.
The Benin-Ore corridor is a vital transport route linking Lagos, Ondo and other South-West states with Edo and the South-South, serving as a major artery for the movement of passengers, goods and petroleum products.
The latest incident comes as several states, including Lagos, Delta, Edo, Abia, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa, continue to experience severe flooding amid intensified rainfall across the country.
