The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected counterfeit drinks operation at Zamfara Plaza, BBA Trade Fair Complex, Lagos State, arresting two suspects in connection with the alleged illegal activity.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended while allegedly revalidating energy drinks, wines and whisky brands, raising concerns about the safety and authenticity of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages circulating in the market.

Among the products reportedly found undergoing revalidation were Bullet energy drink, Hennessy, Martell, Jameson and Glenfiddich, alongside other popular brands.

The operation targeted an alleged practice of tampering with beverage products to make them appear genuine or suitable for sale, potentially exposing consumers to health risks.

The two suspects were arrested at the scene, while further details about the operation, the quantity of products recovered and the identities of those arrested were not immediately available.

NAFDAC is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, distribution, advertisement and sale of food, drugs and other regulated products in Nigeria.

The agency has repeatedly warned against the circulation of counterfeit and substandard products, particularly alcoholic beverages, which may pose serious health risks when their contents or sources cannot be verified.

Further details on the investigation and possible charges against the suspects are expected as the agency continues its enforcement action.
