A fresh controversy has erupted as popular Nollywood actress Doris Ogala, through her lawyers, Synergy Law Partners, issued a formal demand letter to Lagos-based cleric, Dr. Chris Okafor of Grace Nation–Liberation City, accusing him of breaching a promise to marry her and inflicting severe emotional, financial and reputational harm.
In the letter dated December 16, 2025, the law firm alleged that the pastor entered into a long-term personal relationship with Ogala beginning in 2017, during a period of marital distress in her life, and repeatedly made what it described as a “clear and unequivocal” promise to marry her.
According to the lawyers, the alleged promise went beyond private assurances, claiming Ogala was introduced to Okafor’s family and children as a prospective wife, with photographs and videos said to support her expectation of marriage.
The actress further alleged that she acted in reliance on the promise by leaving her troubled marriage and entrusting the cleric with ₦45 million in a single financial transaction, citing deep personal trust.
The dispute escalated recently after Okafor reportedly announced his engagement to another woman, an action the lawyers described as a public and malicious repudiation of the alleged promise.
Ogala claims the development triggered intense emotional trauma, reputational damage, and sustained online harassment, with the letter accusing the cleric of either sponsoring or benefitting from cyberbullying and victim-shaming targeted at her.
Most controversially, the letter alleged the malicious circulation of her nude photographs, said to have been obtained during the relationship, and linked the fallout to severe psychological distress, panic attacks and suicidal thoughts.
As compensation, Ogala is demanding ₦1 billion in aggravated and general damages, which her lawyers say reflects the emotional, physical, financial and reputational harm suffered, as well as the public manner in which the alleged breach occurred.
The law firm gave the cleric 21 days to pay the demanded sum or face legal action in court.
As of the time of filing this report, Dr. Chris Okafor has not publicly responded to the allegations, which are already generating intense debate on social media and reigniting discussions around breach of promise claims, clergy conduct and abuse of influence.
