In case you missed it, a Nigerian woman, Oluranti Akinyemi, has died in the United Kingdom shortly after arriving to attend her son’s graduation ceremony.

According to reports, Akinyemi suffered a sudden cardiac arrest less than 20 hours after landing. She was rushed to Luton and Dunstable Hospital, where she remained on life support for three days before being declared clinically dead on February 14, 2026. She is believed to be a mother of four and had arrived in the UK on February 11 for her son’s graduation scheduled for February 18.

In response, a fundraising campaign was launched on JustGiving to raise £20,000 to repatriate her remains to Nigeria and cover medical and funeral expenses. As of Wednesday, £2,087 had been raised from 97 donors. Adekunle Ogundana, who posted the appeal, wrote: “Help us bring our sister, mother, friend and beloved home, Mrs Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi.”

Social media users have since urged travellers to take health precautions when visiting abroad, including staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol or caffeine, moving regularly during long flights, and using compression socks to aid circulation. Others called for stronger medical collaboration between health authorities and the aviation industry to prevent travel-related emergencies.

The incident adds to a series of recent reports of Nigerian nationals dying shortly after arriving in the UK.
