In case you missed it, OPay Digital Services Limited has threatened legal action against an X user, Cute Hafserh, over a post allegedly claiming that the fintech company was preparing to embark on a “long indefinite break” and advising customers to withdraw their funds.
In a demand letter dated August 31, 2026, and signed by OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, the company accused the X user, whose handle is @haifah_er_abba, of publishing false, malicious, libellous and defamatory information about its operations.
OPay said it was notified on August 30 of the publication, which it alleged was made with the intention of bringing the company into disrepute and misleading members of the public.
According to the letter, the post falsely suggested that OPay would be shutting down for an extended and indefinite period and consequently advised customers to remove their funds from their accounts with the company.
The fintech firm described the publication as “false, malicious, unlawful, libellous and defamatory,” insisting that it had no factual, legal or ethical basis.
OPay further alleged that the publication had infringed on its rights and caused reputational and commercial damage to the brand, as well as harm to its business operations.
The company demanded that the X user permanently delete the post and desist from reproducing or disseminating the alleged false information on X or any other platform.
It also demanded a clear and unequivocal retraction of the publication and an unreserved apology.
OPay gave the user a deadline of 11:59pm West Africa Time on August 31, 2026, to comply with the demands.
The company warned that failure to comply would leave it with no option but to pursue “all appropriate legal action” and seek all remedies available to it under the law.
The letter was signed by Rokosu on behalf of OPay Digital Services Limited.
