Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has officially taken the reins as Chairman of Agege Local Government.

His confirmation came on Wednesday after the unexpected resignation of former chairman, Tunde Azeez, who has struggled with health issues since shortly after assuming office on July 27, 2025. Azeez’s resignation letter was read during plenary by Legislative Leader Adeshina Haruna at the Agege council chamber, drawing unanimous acceptance from councillors.

Obasa, who has been serving in an acting capacity during Azeez’s medical leave, received full legislative backing based on what lawmakers described as his “effective leadership, mobilisation and grassroots engagement” over recent months. Council members said the confirmation would ensure stability and avoid a leadership vacuum in the LG’s administration.

The new chairman was earlier considered a frontrunner for the 2025 local government chairmanship race but his candidacy was stepped down at the time amid internal resistance.

In his acceptance speech, Obasa pledged to strengthen service delivery, deepen community partnerships and sustain ongoing development efforts across Agege. He also expressed well-wishes for his predecessor’s recovery.

During the same session, lawmakers reviewed committee assignments and oversight functions, emphasising improved transparency and accountability in local governance going forward.
