The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has raised alarm over the increasing abuse of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes by unauthorized users across Lagos, warning that violators will face strict enforcement and prosecution.
In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the authority reiterated that the use of BRT lanes is restricted exclusively to designated BRT buses and vehicles operating under franchises regulated by LAMATA.
The agency noted that only emergency response vehicles, such as ambulances and fire trucks, are permitted to use the lanes—and only during active emergency situations.
LAMATA expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of violations involving military personnel, paramilitary agencies, local government and Local Council Development Area (LCDA) buses, as well as private motorists.
According to the authority, the illegal use of the dedicated lanes undermines the efficiency and safety of the BRT system, disrupts scheduled operations, and contributes to traffic congestion across the state.
“The BRT lane was designed to provide fast, reliable, and safe mass transit for commuters. Unauthorized use erodes the gains made in improving urban mobility in Lagos,” the statement said.
The agency stressed that regulations guiding the use of the lanes remain in full force and will be strictly enforced, adding that offenders—regardless of status—will be apprehended and prosecuted in line with Lagos traffic laws.
Penalties for violations, it said, may include fines, vehicle impoundment, and other legal sanctions.
LAMATA also called on all road users, including security agencies and government institutions, to comply with the rules and support efforts to maintain an efficient and orderly transport system.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety, order, and improved mobility across Lagos State, warning that it would not hesitate to take decisive action against violators.
