The Lagos State Government has unveiled a major technological shift in traffic management with the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, to monitor road networks, enhance security surveillance, and improve public safety across the state.

Announcing the initiative on Thursday, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the move as a decisive leap from traditional analog methods to a new era of digital intelligence in traffic control.

According to him, the innovation aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of using technology to drive sustainable urban mobility, safety, and efficiency.

Bakare-Oki emphasized that the drones will transform LASTMA operations from reactive enforcement to predictive, intelligence-driven interventions, enabling faster responses, improved safety outcomes, and strengthened emergency coordination.

He added that the deployment would be implemented under strict privacy safeguards and regulatory compliance to maintain public trust and transparency.

The LASTMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to reducing travel time, minimizing accidents, and safeguarding lives and property, noting that the initiative is a key component of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s THEMES+ agenda.
