The Lagos State Government has continued its enforcement operation to clear illegal squatters, shanties and makeshift structures along the Orile Iganmu to Mile 2 section of the Badagry Expressway, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy against encroachment on road medians.
The multi-agency exercise, which began on the directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on June 27, has entered its 50th day, with officials demolishing illegal structures, evacuating waste and preventing the reoccupation of cleared areas.
The operation is being carried out by the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Task Force, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Mobile Police (Mopol).
As part of the exercise, enforcement officials also seized several carts used for the illegal dumping of refuse along the expressway. Authorities said the action was aimed at curbing indiscriminate waste disposal and eliminating environmental and safety hazards along the corridor.
The state government said all forms of illegal activities on the road median, including unauthorised trading, makeshift settlements and illegal waste disposal, would continue to attract strict enforcement.
Officials described the exercise as one of the longest sustained clearance operations on the Badagry Expressway, noting that it was designed to reclaim public spaces, improve environmental sanitation and eliminate security risks associated with illegal occupation of the road median.
The government stressed that the operation was not a one-off exercise but a continuous enforcement programme to ensure the corridor remains free of illegal structures and activities.
Residents and stakeholders were urged to cooperate with enforcement agencies and refrain from acts that undermine public infrastructure. The government also disclosed that similar clearance operations would be extended to other parts of the state affected by illegal encroachment as part of efforts to keep Lagos cleaner, safer and more orderly.
