The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a 31-year-old woman over an alleged rental and commodity fraud valued at about ₦105 million.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the suspect allegedly defrauded at least 13 prospective tenants of about ₦35 million by posing as the owner of a four-bedroom duplex at 10 Charles Onyebe Street, Divine Homes, Thomas Estate, Ajah.
She reportedly collected various sums from accommodation seekers who believed they were securing rental apartments in the property. Suspicion arose after delays in handing over keys, when multiple individuals showed up, each claiming to have paid for the same apartment.
NAN further reported that the suspect also allegedly defrauded her neighbour of over ₦70 million, claiming she would supply parboiled rice at a discounted rate.
Confirming the arrest, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Dayo Akinbisehin, said the suspect is currently under investigation and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of inquiries.
