The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Tijani, has warned that the command will intensify enforcement against police personnel found driving commercial vehicles or motorcycles while wearing their uniforms.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to the command headquarters in Ikeja on Friday, Tijani described the practice as unprofessional and damaging to the image of the police.
He said the command would strengthen enforcement to identify and arrest offenders, stressing that security personnel are prohibited from operating commercial vehicles in uniform.
The commissioner, however, noted that many of those seen wearing police uniforms while engaging in commercial transport are not serving officers.
According to him, most are dismissed personnel or individuals illegally wearing police uniforms to impersonate security operatives and deceive members of the public.
Tijani said fresh directives would be issued to divisional police officers to arrest anyone found unlawfully wearing police uniforms or violating the directive. He also urged residents to report such cases, assuring them that all reports would be promptly investigated.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining discipline within the force, enforcing professional standards and strengthening public confidence through effective policing.
Earlier, the Head of Lagos Operations of NAN, Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole, urged the police to address the growing number of people seen wearing security uniforms while driving commercial vehicles, warning that the trend could tarnish the image of the police and other security agencies.
