The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Thursday sealed several buildings across the state for various environmental infractions, particularly the deliberate discharge of raw sewage into public drains and the construction of unsanitary facilities.
Among the affected properties is a building located at 34 Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island, shut down for discharging untreated sewage into public drains, resulting in offensive odour and wastewater flowing through the community. Officials described the situation as a public nuisance and a danger to human health.
A block of shops along Powerline Road in Meiran, Alimosho, was also sealed for the illegal construction and operation of an unsanitary toilet facility on a road setback without approval. The facility was said to pose significant environmental and health risks.
Similarly, a three-storey building at 38 Adeniji Adele Street, Lagos Island, and a property at H29 House of Jesus Street, Langbasa, Ibeju-Lekki, were shut for the deliberate discharge of raw sewage into public drains.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged residents to adopt proper wastewater management practices and maintain good hygiene to protect public health and promote environmental sustainability.
He warned that any act of environmental nuisance or pollution constitutes a serious threat to public health and will attract strict sanctions or prosecution.
