The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has intensified its clampdown on illegal commercial motorcyclists, street traders, and traffic violators, following a week-long enforcement exercise across major flashpoints in the state.

Led by Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele, the Taskforce launched the operation on Monday, targeting notorious hotspots such as Ikorodu Roundabout, Mile 12, Ketu-Alapere, Abule-Egba, Ile-Epo, Oke-Odo, and Iyana-Ipaja underbridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

According to the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the areas had become sources of recurring complaints over traffic gridlock, obstruction of pedestrian movement, and environmental infractions. Officials described the situation as a “three-headed violation” involving traffic, environmental, and criminal offences.

During the enforcement, officers met resistance at Akesan Bus Stop in Alimosho, where hoodlums and Okada riders attempted to disrupt the operation. The officials, however, dispersed them without casualties.

By the end of the exercise, 22 motorcycles and 15 vehicles had been impounded, while 17 suspects were arrested for various offences. CSP Akerele noted that the reduced number of motorcycles seized indicates progress in curbing illegal Okada operations on highways.

He warned defaulters to desist or face severe consequences, stressing that Lagos would not tolerate actions that compromise safety and order. Confiscated motorcycles, he said, would be forfeited through the courts and crushed, while errant drivers would be sanctioned in line with the law.

Akerele added that the enforcement drive forms part of a broader strategy to ease traffic congestion, combat environmental degradation, and enhance public safety.

The Taskforce assured residents of its commitment to maintaining order and keeping Lagos safer, cleaner, and more secure.
