The Lagos State Government has announced plans to host the 10th anniversary edition of the iconic #Greater Lagos Countdown, with festivities scheduled to run from Tuesday, December 30 to Wednesday, December 31, 2025, across multiple locations in the state.
The landmark end-of-year celebration, themed “Legends of Afrobeats,” is designed to honour the pioneers whose creativity and influence laid the foundation for Afrobeats, Nigeria’s globally celebrated music genre.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the 10th anniversary as a major cultural milestone for Lagos State and the nation. She revealed that activities will take place simultaneously at six strategic venues across the state, beginning daily from 7:00 p.m.
The designated venues are Ikorodu Town Hall (Ikorodu), Agege Stadium (Ikeja), Badagry Grammar School (Badagry), Epe Recreation Centre (Epe), Tafawa Balewa Square (Lagos Island), and Nathaniel Idowu Football Pitch, Oregẹ (Ajegunle).
According to the commissioner, the Greater Lagos Countdown has grown beyond a New Year’s Eve event into a cultural movement that reflects the creativity, resilience, and vibrant spirit of Lagosians.
“The #Greater Lagos Countdown has evolved beyond a New Year’s Eve celebration into a cultural movement that embodies the spirit, creativity, and resilience of Lagosians. This 10th anniversary is particularly significant, and through the theme ‘Legends of Afrobeats,’ we are deliberately celebrating the icons who shaped our music and projected Nigeria’s cultural identity to the world,” she said.
Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka noted that Afrobeats remains one of Nigeria’s strongest cultural exports, with Lagos firmly positioned as the heartbeat of the genre. She added that the 2025/2026 edition of the countdown aligns with the state government’s vision of positioning Lagos as Africa’s leading hub for creativity, entertainment, and tourism.
“From tourism to arts and entertainment, Lagos continues to set the pace. This celebration speaks to legacy, continuity, and inspiration for the next generation of creatives,” she added.
Organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Greater Lagos Countdown has consistently served as a platform for cultural expression, entertainment, youth engagement, and economic activity, drawing thousands of residents and visitors annually.
The 10th anniversary edition is expected to feature electrifying performances, cultural showcases, and a world-class countdown experience that underscores Lagos’ reputation as a global city of innovation, excellence, and entertainment.
Members of the public have been invited to take part in the historic celebration, with tickets available via tix.africa/lagoscountdown2026, as Lagos prepares to usher in the new year by celebrating the past, present, and future of Afrobeats.
