The Lagos State Government, led by Secretary to the State Government Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, has announced plans to create a formal Blue Economy policy that blends environmental care with economic growth and social inclusion.
The announcement came on July 14, 2025, during a visit by senior executives from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) on a study tour focused on Nigeria’s Blue Economy and sustainable development.
Salu-Hundeyin highlighted Lagos’ unique position as a coastal megacity with over 180 km of coastline, making it central to Nigeria’s Blue Economy goals.
She pointed to key projects under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, expanded ferry services, shoreline protection in Lekki and Badagry, and marine tourism developments like Orange Island and Eko Atlantic City. These initiatives aim to boost economic opportunities, reduce traffic, and support environmental sustainability.
The SSG urged the visiting executives to assess Lagos’ infrastructure, regulations, funding, and agency cooperation to help shape practical policy recommendations.
The study tour, part of a national leadership course, seeks to contribute to Nigeria’s broader efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil and develop its marine resources responsibly.
